Sciatica Q&A
What is sciatica?
Sciatica is a condition that develops if the sciatic nerve sustains damage. Since the sciatic nerve is the biggest nerve in the human body, the pain can occur anywhere from the back to the bottom of the foot. Many people who suffer from sciatica have sporadic, sharp pain in their back. The pain may sometimes shoot down the leg, to just below the knee or even to the foot.
Why do people develop sciatica?
There are several common causes of sciatica. Degeneration of spinal discs, compression of spinal discs, weight gain and spinal stenosis are all potential sciatica triggers. The reason for sciatica is sometimes unclear, but once the condition is diagnosed it can be effectively treated with chiropractic care regardless of the cause.
How does Dr. Hui diagnose sciatica?
One of the most effective tools in diagnosing sciatica is the patient's descriptions of the problem. Sciatica typically develops in one leg, so patients often complain of pain in the lower back and in a single leg. Some patients will also have other symptoms that can help Dr. Hui diagnose sciatica, for example, numbness in the leg, or the feeling that your leg or foot is "falling asleep.” Several diagnostic tests may also be used, including x-rays, MRIs, CT scan, and EMGs.
How is sciatica treated?
Sciatica treatment can be approached in a couple of ways, and a combination approach often works best. Because sciatica may have its origins in a trapped nerve, gentle manipulation can easily correct this issue and free the nerve. Traction (non-surgical spinal decompression) can separate the spinal discs using a low amount of force. The traction process will alleviate pain and pressure. It will also allow the sciatic nerve and discs to be properly positioned and will thus be able to resolve sciatica in most people.
